In anticipation of the launch of the I All-Russian Pharmaceutical Run, we publish historical essays on the history of the development of the healthcare system and pharmacology in the cities participating in the large-scale action. Indeed, respect for traditions, support for the old school, the transfer of best practices and a healthy mentoring system are key to the development of a successful future. The pharmaceutical industry is no exception.

Since ancient times, the nomadic Scythian peoples in the territory of Tatarstan used herbs and made decoctions when treating wounds and mutilations.
Officially, the history of pharmaceuticals in Kazan dates back to the time of the glorious transformations of Peter I. By order of the tsar, the first military hospital opens, at which a medical school is located. Many doctors were trained in it, who also mastered the basics of pharmaceuticals.
It is also worth noting the history of the pharmacy business, which was closely connected with the famous Brening pharmacy – a German by birth. It was opened in 1850. It was located at the intersection of Universitetskaya and Bauman streets. & nbsp; In the capital of the republic, there were many pharmacies owned by Germans – descendants of the colonists invited by Empress Catherine II. One of them, the talented chemist Karl Karlovich Klaus, discovered the chemical element Ruthenium in 1844, which to this day adorns the periodic table.
Well, of course, you can not ignore the Kazan Medical and Pharmaceutical College, which in 2021 celebrates its 100th anniversary. Its history begins only after the revolution. The new power of the Bolsheviks was faced with the task of recruiting and training fresh personnel, instead of the old German class layer of pharmacists. Since until 1917 there were no pharmaceutical schools, which is somehow strange, given the level of development of medicine and science in the Russian Empire. As a result, it was decided to create a network of pharmaceutical schools.
October 5, 1921 the first Kazan pharmaceutical school opens. Albert Albertovich Wilde was appointed its director. A year later, the first laboratory classes were held in special pharmacy classes. With the collapse of the industry, there was a lack of quality medicines. The number of fake drugs has increased. It was also necessary to work on vaccines designed to cope with epidemics that grew during the course of the devastation and civil war, such as Spaniard. Such schools did an excellent job in this difficult but vital business.
In the twenties, the school principal A.A. Wilde wrote a textbook on pharmacy technology “A Guide to Pharmacy Classes”, which is exhibited at the Museum of the Kazan Medical and Pharmaceutical College.
Today, the Republic of Tatarstan actively cooperates with many countries. So, at the end of 2018, a delegation from India, headed by forty heads of pharmaceutical companies, visited Kazan. On November 20, the same forum decided to bring India and Russia closer in terms of joint development of the pharmaceutical industry. This is a real significant event in the improvement of medicines and a big leap for the Russian pharmacy in the future.
